The environmental art installation Hiljainen kansa (The Silent People) consists of approximately one thousand peat-headed figures standing in a field along Highway 5. The installation has been located at the site since the summer of 1994 and was originally created by artist Reijo Kela in 1988.
The Hanslankarit Youth Workshop, operated by the Municipality of Suomussalmi, repairs and dresses the figures twice a year.
During the summer season, a café is open on the site.
Location: Approximately 30 km from the centre of Suomussalmi towards Kuusamo, along Highway 5 (Viitostie 547).
